Hero Returns (HERO RETURNS) is the twenty-fourth chapter of the Trigun manga. It is also the fourth chapter of Trigun Maximum.

Summary

A summary of an event from 150 years ago is explained and we see a flashback of when Vash and Knives first arrive on the planet. The entire flashback turns out to a dream had by Vash. Elsewhere, Wolfwood passes by a man creating coffins, while back to Vash performs his daily routine. Wolfwood barges into Vash performing his routine and notes the potent stench that he gives off. After Wolfwood chastises Vash for his stench, he informs him of the two factions that dominate the town they're in. The two families are at war with each other for a recently excavated Plant, but in recent times the local citizens have joined in too. Because of this, the death toll to the city has exponentially risen. Although Wolfwood wants to flee, Vash refuses as he has business with someone in town.

Meanwhile, a couple of people named Sensei and Brad ride on a Sandsteamer talk about soon meeting the legendary outlaw. Arriving in the town, they meet with Vash who is being constricted by a couple of kids. At a different location, Vash talks with Sensei about their home and is then presented with new equipment. The topic then changes to about Knives and Vash's involvement with the hole in the 5th moon. During the discussion, Brad loses his cool, but regains his composure after Sensei stops him. With Brad out of the scene, Sensei reveals that Brad was turned down by Jessica who favors Vash more than he. As Sensei performs does a surgical operation on Vash an armored truck crashes into the Sandsteamer Doc and Brad rode in on. Wolfwood arrives at the scene and witnesses a siege in process. Soon, Vash arrives at the scene and after an argument with Wolfwood, Vash creates a scene where he uses his moniker to clear out the area.
