Synopsis[]
A long time ago, a human migrant ship in search of a new planet suddenly has an emergency. With Rem's help, a young boy named Vash and a young boy named Knives land in an escape pod in No Man's Land, but Vash wanders in the endless desert and eventually passes out.
Summary[]
Rem watches a video of Vash and Knives first birthday. Vash and Knives see her and joke that she is the most doting parent, but Rem is happy to be that. Vash suggest that next year they again do a birthday party and Rem agrees.
After Vash and Knives land on the No Man's Land, Vash wakes up and goes to look for Knives. As he finds it, Knives reveals the incident was his fault and Vash is also responsible as he gave him the program access codes. Vash then runs and goes to look for Rem and their ship, but gets scared after he sees all the dead people and eventually passes out.
Vash saved by Ship Three residents
Some survivors find him and take Vash. Luida realizes that he is plant and guesses he is "independent". She explains that plants are usually cloned from an original cell, but on rare occasion, they can give birth. Brad wonders if Vash is dangerous and if they should put him in a case like the other plants. Luida guesses it should be fine, but Conrad, the team leader of the Sinners in molecular plant studies may know better. As Vash wakes up and speaks, which surprises Brad. Luida asks him from which ship he was. Vash explains he was on Ship Five and wonders where is Rem. After they look up who Rem is, Vash explains that she raised him and his brother, but he is likely dead now. Brad guesses that Vash escaped on his own and left everyone else to die. He tells Luida to find Ship Five, but since its been eighty hours, she believes it would be too late. Brad states they may have managed to activate their gravity plant like them and survive. A bit later, Luida introduces herself to Vash and explains that she is in charge of Ship Three. She wonders what Vash produces as a generator, however Vash explains that unlike normal plants, he can't make anything. His brother was different, but Vash is only able to eat, drink and sleep.

Later, Luida tells Vash that Brad rescued survivors from Ship Five, but Rem wasn't among them. As the ship is in ruins, she doesn't believe that Rem survived. Other survivors also told them that Rem stayed aboard until the end trying to stop the crash. Brad shows Luida that all he could find from Rem was a small box containing some pictures of her and the twins. He also got a non-working device and damaged black box. Luida gives Vash one picture of Rem, Knives and him, and tells him to believe in himself as there has to be something that only he can do.

Months later, Brad wonders for how long they intend to keep Vash alive. However, Luida isn't listening as she just manages to reconstruct part of the black box and the two manage to hear Rem's voice and that there is a navigational error. However, in that moment, they end up having a problem with the electrical plant. Going to it, Luida and Brad see that the flower is opening. Its vitals are bad and Luida guesses that the plans may not be compatible with the planet's environment. The two are then called to Vash's cell, who wants to get out, knowing that there is something happening with the plant. He explains that he hears the plant voice and its calling for help. Brad doesn't believe him, however Luida explains that Rem sacrificed herself and trusted him, so she would too. She releases Vash and takes him to the plant. There was speaks with the plant and it returns to normal.

After that, Luida decides to release Vash from his cell and gives him his own room as a resident of Ship Three. She tells him to also thanks Brad, as without him, she wouldn't have been able to convince everyone to agree. He will no longer be handcuffed, but there still will be a guard with him. Rem asks him to look at the other plants and Vash starts working with them and helping with the plant maintenance. In time, Brad and Vash would go to other ships where Vash helps with their plants as well. One day Luida gives him a red jacket as a present from everyone on the ship. Vash loves it, and thanks her, explaining that he is glad to be able to live there and call it a home. After she leaves, Vash tries the jacket, but its a bit large for him.
After five years, Brad is finally able to fix the black box. Then they hear Knives who states that all went according his plans and that Vash is also at fault for providing the program access codes. Brad realizes that the other independent and that he didn't die during the crash. Luida wonders why would Vash lie, and Brad guesses that they are working together and are not on the human's side. Vash overhears them and runs away. Luida and Brad to go his room, but realize he ran as he must had overheard them. Luida finds a note from Vash, where he thanks them and that he considers them as a family. He can't continue to lie and as he can't forget his past, he will face it. Luida intends to go and find Vash. Brad tells her to apologize to Vash for him, but Luida intends to bring him, so that Brad can do it himself.
Soon after running away, Vash is able to find Knives.
